Description
Summary:Singapore is currently in the phase of transitioning from BS 8110 to Eurocode2 for building design. A detailed analysis of the impact of Eurocode 2 in the current structural design environment is needed. This report presents an evaluation of flexure design methods used in both codes for designing of reinforced concrete beams. The main purpose is to analyse the flexure behaviour of the reinforced concrete beams using design methods from both codes against experimental results. The chosen specimens were simply supported reinforced concrete beams which were given either a point load or uniformly distributed load till ultimate failure was reached. An excel spreadsheet was created to assist in the calculation of predicted moment capacity and comparison of predicted and experimental moment capacity. Using the data, such as dimensions and concrete strength, published in selected research papers, information was entered into the excel spreadsheet to obtain the predicted ultimate moment capacity. These calculated values were used to compare with the experimental values published in the selected research papers to evaluate the design codes, BS 8110 and Eurocode 2. Further studies were conducted on other types of beam and contributing factors that may affect the reinforced concrete beam ultimate moment capacity. These are mainly lightweight aggregate concrete, high strength concrete, amount of steel reinforcement, yield strength of steel reinforcement, concrete strength, X/ d limits, types of loading and dimension effect. The results were subsequently tabulated into statistical and graphical data for detailed analysis. The analysis was done in two major manners, the relative accuracy of both codes and the effects of ultimate moment capacity contributing factors. The analysis of graphical and statistical data concludes that both the design codes gave very similar results in normal weight aggregate, lightweight aggregate and high strength concrete. Among the moment capacity contributing factors, Properties of steel reinforcement has the most influence on moment capacity. Lastly, the X/d limits stated in each design codes provides a good guideline for the design of a safe reinforced concrete beam.
