Summary: | This final year project was to study miniaturization techniques to reduce the size of a High Frequency (HF) antenna while retaining its wide-band radiation characteristics. The HF antenna operating at a frequency of 2MHz to 30MHz is to be placed above a building. Some of the miniaturization techniques investigated in this project includes the different ways of bending the antenna wires. Theoretical simulation will be conducted using Ansoft’s High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS).
HFSS is software that simulates full wave electromagnetic (EM) field for arbitrary 3D volumetric passive device modelling. It employs the Finite Element Method (FEM), adaptive meshing and brilliant graphics to give unparalleled performance and insight to all of the 3D EM problems. Most importantly, it can be used to calculate parameters such as S-Parameters, Z-Parameters and displays 2D and 3D radiation patterns.
In this report, the performances of the half-wave dipole antenna above infinite ground, building and also in free space are also to be discussed. Some results of the simulation by HFSS will be validated with the results from different simulation software (FEKO) which is simulated by another student to ensure accuracy and consistency.
In view of the time limitation and the complexity of the project, hardware fabrication will not be performed as there will not be any impact on the results, for the hardware testing phase is only for validation of the results simulated via the software. |
