This project is a continuation of a previous research, which aims to validate the dominant storytelling theories in films by correlating them with results of quantitative audio-visual analysis of films. While the previous research’s focus is on the stereo soundtrack of films, this project focuses on the 5.1 Surround soundtrack. The project focuses on Asian Vengeance films. In this project, a theoretical sequence structure is used to analyse and identify key narrative events in the films. Audio content analysis is conducted by using an audio measure known as Root Means Square (RMS) Energy. Key findings include the identification of similar observations in narrative events of different Asian Vengeance films, as well as the unique usage of surround channels in certain narrative events of the films. The paper will elaborate more on the methodology and observations obtained, as well as suggest areas of improvement and recommendations for further development.
