Description
Summary:This final report is a review of the design and screening processes of a series of shock isolators, which are specially used for protecting OCMO (oven-controlled micro-electromechanical systems oscillator) from being damaged by impact. A suspension structure was applied to this series of shock isolators, and magnesium alloy was chosen as the base material since it was proved to be the most suitable material for making such suspension shock isolator due to its high strength, good elasticity, high damping coefficient and relatively low cost, according to the material selection charts. CAD (computer-aided design) model of each design was constructed first, and after that FEA (finite element analysis), such as modal analysis and drop test, was conducted to simulate the performance of each design in different approaches. Based on the comprehensive simulation results, the design with the tether width of 0.4 mm and the slot width of 0.1 mm was finally selected as the most proper designed shock isolator, for the reason that it is able to efficiently prevent shock energy from transferring to the OCMO, as well as to disperse most of the energy within a short period of time, under the premise of safety. Besides, numerical calculation on thermal resistance and heat transfer rate was also carried out for the OCMO, and it reveals that the micro heater is nearly isothermal and the heat loss from the OCMO is mainly due to conduction.
