Summary:The main objective of this Final Year Project is to research on methods to detect and image the edges of simple shaped objects using ultrasound. This research supplements the on-going project by Professor Yoon to develop a Biomimetic Acoustic Transducer (BAT) array to “determine the entire shape of topography in real time by characterizing the reflected acoustic wave collected by the BAT array”. Methods suggested were based on assumptions of a controlled environment in an anechoic chamber with controlled conditions of 25°C and 50% humidity level. A smooth concrete cube with sides 0.5m is used for the experiment. The single transducer is used for sound source generation and reception, which can also be further expanded with multiple receivers of microphone array. The method proposed for the edge detection would be based on the differentiation of the impulse response from the planar surfaces and edges as well as 2-dimensional sector mapping using the time-of-flight (TOF) system. At the end of the research, possible implementation of this edge detection technique into ultrasound visualization is suggested, together with underlying limitations and possibility of overcoming these limitations.
