Description
Summary:Aerogel filled composite sandwich has been an area of interest as it offers an excellent insulating properties. When aerogel is coupled together with glass fiber reinforced composites material structure, it makes the structure both strong and highly thermal insulating. In this project, a honeycombed curved sandwich structure is made from GFRP/BMI and aerogel. Physical experiment was conducted and the test results were used to validate and define the boundary conditions for the finite element model developed using ANSYS 14.5. Both the simulation and physical experiment suggest that the heat transfer mainly go through the thickness of the panel, only some heat radiated in the radial direction of the panel. A non-destructive thermography test was also conducted and concluded that panel defects will affect the insulation performance of the panel.
