Summary: | The iNemo [1] smart sensor platform has been utilised in many ways in recent years. The system can consist of various sensors such as gyroscope, accelerometer, temperature as well as pressure sensors. These sensors can then be used together with other electrical components depending on the user’s application.
In the United States of America, a total of 46,200 stroller related injuries were reported between 2008 and 2011[2]. In fact, a video was posted up in YouTube showing a baby stroller falling into the train tracks when the mother of the child failed to apply the brakes on the stroller [3]. Fortunately, the child survived.
In this project, the gyroscope and the accelerometer is being used together with a capacitive touch sensor to create an automated system for baby strollers. This approach will give users that added safety feature unavailable in present manual strollers available in the market.
This project has been particularly difficult on a personal level due to the lack of experience in handling microcontrollers. A lot of time has been put into familiarising the functions as well as the applications of the microcontroller through reading and practicing basic applications. Apart from that, the limited knowledge that I have about capacitive sensors and IC circuits have impeded me from creating a fully functioning automated the baby stroller.
Nonetheless, the main aspects of the project, which are, receiving data from the sensors, creating a capacitive sensor, as well as building the braking system, has been achieved. With more time, these aspects can be fine-tuned to produce a fully functioning system. |
