Summary: | Epilepsy is a chronic non-communicable disorder of the brain, characterized by seizures that occur at unpredictable moments. Epileptic seizures also known as fit, are short episodes of irregular or excessive brain activity. It was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) states that more than 50 million people worldwide are suffering from epilepsy. Epilepsy also affects everybody, regardless of age, gender or race. The usual methods of representing epilepsy are the electroencephalography (EEG) graphical representations and these graphs are normally understood by medical professionals only. In addition, not everyone has experience with epilepsy and thus it is important to raise the awareness and understanding of this critical condition.
In this final year project, a visualisation system that converts numerical medical data into visual graphics is developed. This project targets the mass audience, thus ensuring people of all ages is able to relate to the visual content and at the same time, interpret the occurrence of an epileptic seizure. The system is able to recognize the data uploaded to the Processing software. The information relevant to the epileptic seizure, that is when the EEG values are large, will be transmitted back onto the screen as (motion) images.
Several development methodologies were involved during the system design process in order to find the best approach to maximize the system performance. The latest version of the system implements the algorithms in Processing software with a combination of appropriate user interface features like usability, simplicity and being intuitive. |
