A revisit of manner and path : a study on the motion verbs Tao, Zhui, Gan, Chuang and Chong in modern Chinese

Motion verbs in Modern Chinese are often classified into manner-of-motion verbs and path verbs (Chu 2004, Ma 2008). However, there are different opinions when it comes to the classification of tao, zhui, gan, chuang, and chong,e.g.,Ma (2008), Fan(2013) and Shi(to appear). Given that all these five verbs seem to express motion at a fast rate, this paper aims to decompose these five verbs in order to find out whether they lexicalize manner of path information.
By using different reference books, online source, previous work as well as Chinese corpus data, this paper analyzes the semantics of tao, zhui, gan, chuang, and chong. In addition, building on tests of manner and path information in previous studies, this paper also attempts to identify whether these five verbs are path or manner-of-motion verb. This study finds that tao, zhui, gan, chuang, and chong exhibits the features of manner-of-motion verbs. In addition, this study also finds that these five verbs do not necessarily lexicalize a fast rate. |
