Summary: | It is always of high demand for institutes and academies over the world to have a centralized knowledge archive system that is able to store a diverse range of information and knowledge generated throughout the process of learning, research and education. Data is not restricted to formal reports and research papers. It can include snap shots of student’s projects, excellent course works, or many significant multimedia products that are not usually managed in an academic organization.
The system to store these types of data should be agile and scalable. The pieces of content should be organized to provide meaningful data to perform future analysis operations.
However, current popular systems in general do not seem to meet the desired requirements. Most common solution for academic organizations is to build a system around a well-known Content Management System, such as Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal, but they have grown to have various disadvantages, for example, in-extensible data models, difficult to upgrade and maintain, overhead of server resources.
Project IEM-APAS (IEM’s Academic Product Archival System) is a web application attempting to address the above problems with the specific use-cases of School of Information Engineering and Media, Nanyang Technological University. By extensively rethinking the architecture of multi-media content storage, editing and displaying system, the system design aims to satisfy both information consumer and content editor, at the same time, providing developers with an agile component interface and a powerful workflow automation tool set that supports fast paced development process and ensure the quality of the project in long term. |
