Summary: | Conventional instrumentation, built for precision and accuracy are often complex and physically unsuited for urban deployment or multiplexed into a network. Therefore, there exist a mismatch of requirements and qualities for microclimate studies, where fine spatial and temporal sensitivity forms the foundation. The intention of this project is to exploit open-source technologies to construct a prototype capable of measuring microclimate variations, while being low-cost, easily deployable and scalable and low-powered. A network of 3 Router sensors and Coordinator is prototyped using Arduino microcontroller, Raspberry Pi single-board computer, and ZigBee and Wi-Fi communication protocols. The wireless sensor network is deployed within Crest Secondary School as a test bed. Correlations of measured environmental data between Routers, and battery life suggests a potential to further develop an implementable model. In addition, the prototype is to be further developed for applications including facilities management and multidisciplinary curriculum. |
