The discourse of modernity in the Western world was already complicated and involved various problems. Once the discourse of modernity was introduced to China through translation, different versions of literary modernity were developed in China’s context, and emerged in the forms of the late Qing novels, May Fourth new literature, revolutionary literature, modern poetry etc. Singapore Chinese literature began receiving different versions of realism from China since 1920s, and these versions co-existed in the field of Singapore Chinese literature, occupying the mainstream. In the late 1950s, the first wave of modern literature movement was launched in Singapore, led by the discourse of Singapore Chinese modern poetry. In the late 1960s, the second wave of modern literature movement was launched, works of high modernism were produced, and Singapore Chinese version of modern poetry matured. The discourse of Singapore Chinese modern poetry developed simultaneously with the Singapore Chinese literature upon the independence of Singapore in 1965, shaping the subjectivity and uniqueness of Singapore Chinese literature. This dissertation aims to return to the historical site of the emergence of modern poetry in the field of Singapore Chinese literature, and through interpreting the essays, debates and works of modern poetry, studies how the idea of ''modern poetry'' was understood, received and applied by the poets then, so as to clarify the idea of the modern in Singapore Chinese modern poetry. By studying the idea of the modern in Singapore Chinese modern poetry, we will have a better understanding on the subjectivity and uniqueness of Singapore Chinese literature.
