Description
This paper attempts to use the concept of identity to discuss Singapore Chinese’s identity model, placing emphasis on the time period between 2011 and 2015. Using Wang Guangwu’s concept of South East Asia Chinese’s identity as a foundation, this paper proposes that Singapore Chinese’s national identity has the potential to include cultural, racial and class identity. Singapore’s government has put in a lot of effort to build the Singapore Identity, the government has also attempted to expand the scope of national identity to include cultural, racial and class identity. The efforts to expand the scope of national identity are starting to bear fruits, thus I propose that Singapore’s national identity has the potential to include cultural, race and class identity. This paper will also include suggestions to strengthen Singapore’s national identity and widen its scope to include other forms of identity. At the same time, this paper also cautions against national identity becoming a barrier between Singapore’s and other countries’ relationships and how to prevent this from happening. This paper contains three main parts:1. Using concepts proposed by scholars to discuss South East Asia Chinese’s Identity and what it encompasses.2. Discussing Singapore Chinese’s Identity and its potential to include other forms of identity.3. Suggesting ways to strengthen and widen the scope of Singapore’s national identity.
