Description
Summary:This research project looked into the possibility of developing the mechanical micromilling process. The work concentrated on the fabrication of the micromilling tool. A method of fabricating the micromilling tool is proposed with tungsten carbide selected as the tool material. The method makes use of the existing complementary technologies, wire electro-discharge grinding (WEDG) to prepare the tool blank and focused ion beam (FIB) machining to form the tool geometry. Thus, empirical studies of FIB machining on tungsten carbide formed part of the research work. The effectiveness of the fabricated micromilling tool was put to test on a custom desktop micromilling system.
