The trend of Chinese immigration to America : a comparative study between early and modern immigrants

Description
Chinese are one of the earliest immigrants who reached the shores of America in the 19th century. Two centuries later, America still remain as the top country of choice for modern Chinese immigrants. Hence, it is unsurprising that many studies have been done to learn more about the reasons behind this migration trend. However, most of these studies are mainly focused on immigrants from a certain time period and only a rare few had ventured into comparative research between early and modern immigrants. Therefore, this paper aims to broaden the field of American Chinese study by comparing early and modern immigrants. By doing so, this paper hopes that it will give light to any apparent connections between the factors across the time period, and gives new insights to future studies that explore the possibility of manipulating this migration trend. This paper will have two key areas of discussion. First, it will identify the different push and pull factors that motivates the early and modern Chinese to leave their home country. It will then analyse whether there are any connections between these factors and how they may affect future migration pattern. Secondly, this paper will focus on post-migration life of the Chinese immigrants. It is important to understand how post-migration life affects the Chinese as it will influence their decision to remain in America as well as those who intends to migrate to America. The paper will conclude with a prediction on future migration trend as well as possibilities in the future that might break this pattern.
