Summary:This paper explores how university-level Singaporean students of Chinese, Malay, and Indian racial groups negotiate racial identities within the multiracial framework of Chinese-Malay-Indian-Other typology espoused by the state. It studies (1) the extent of state’s administration of multiculturalism affecting individual’s perceptions on racial identities (2) the elements and perceptions that make up racial identities (3) how the conceptions of racial identities together with other factors such as income, religion and etc. affect mate selection for marriage. It seeks to explore the parameters of consideration for a marriage partner and ultimately how one sees another as equal or unequal being for union.
