The Singapore Teochew Students’ Association (Xinchaoliu) is a new Chinese migrant student organization founded 14 years ago. It is uniquely supported by the Singapore local Chinese community. To join this association, strict prerequisite of regional identity must be followed. Its dual label in between the new migrants and the old Overseas Chinese gives them more advantages over other organizations in helping members adapt to the new environment. All these come from collective identity of hardship that their common ancestor endured in Nanyang. Nowadays, the integration and assimilation of new Chinese migrants have become an issue in the Singapore society. However, the Singapore Teochew Students’ Association is able to benefit from the linkages with the traditional Chinese social organizations, Singapore Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan. They demonstrate new image of the Chinese new migrants, as compared to the stereotypes and traditional
impression of Chinese students. This research first defines the Teochew culture and then traces the history of early Teochew in Southeast Asia. It studies the case of Singapore Teochew Students’ Association to provide new perspective on social issues of new migrants in the 21st century. |
