Tough hello, easy goodbye : a study on online dating and its implications on the formation of relationships in Singapore

Online dating is often perceived as a crutch for the shy, reserved and introverted who have failed terribly in romantic endeavors. As Singapore progresses toward modernity, the advent of communications technology also sparked the emergence of social networking applications (apps), more commonly recognized as online dating apps. Compared to traditional matchmaking, online dating apps proffer convenience, efficiency and unprecedented accessibility to a wider pool of potential romantic partners. Increasingly, Singaporeans are hopping onto the technology bandwagon, becoming active participants of online dating. While intentions of use are largely diffused, the potential to create or even enhance one’s presentation on these platforms begs the question of legitimacy, authenticity and trust. Using preceding concepts such as Anomie, The Presentation of Self, and analyzing gendered differences, this study examines the dynamics of interaction amongst online daters in Singapore and attempts to map out its implications upon the formation of relationships. Online daters in Singapore claim platonic intentions and expansion of social circles as the main justification for its use. However, the target of their attention remains within the opposite gender, with interactions characterized by superficiality and mistrust, resulting in transient and meaningless relationships.
