Description
Summary:This project presents results from the study of the impact response of round composite and sandwich panels consisting of carbon fibre reinforced composite skins and honeycomb core by a spherical steel impactor. Studies are first carried out to determine the material properties of the paper used in the making of the paper honeycomb. Tensile tests were performed on the paper provided by Dupont in the directions along the fibre and transverse to the fibre. The experimental results are then used in the simulation of honeycomb using ANSYS version 6.0, to determine the Young's modulus of the honeycomb structure in three directions. Experiments were also carried out on the honeycomb to determine its properties and results compare very well with that obtained from finite element (FE) results.
