Many academics have researched the design of Management Control System (MCS) pertaining to multinational companies in countries such as the UK, USA and Japan. However, up till now, there are little studies made with respect to the design of MCS in the Singapore context. Hence, this provides the motivation for the conduct of this research. This report, therefore hopes to contribute to the research done thus far in the design of MCS in Singapore and to provide a trigger point for further research in the same area. The case study approach was adopted because of its advantages and its effectiveness in the attainment of our objective, which is to better the understanding of MCS in the local context. The case company chosen for the study is from the computer industry. This choice was made because of the characteristics of the industry as well as the fact that the company has overseas subsidiaries. The latter fact facilitates comparison with findings from other concurrent final year research projects on the practices of Japan, US and European MNCs in Singapore. The results of this research are not inconsistent with the results of other researches found in the literature. Although the results of this study cannot be conclusive because of the constraint of using a single case study approach, this research has succeeded in achieving the objectives it has set out. A management control system that is compatible with the strategies and objectives of an
organisation has been viewed as one of the underlying factors crucial for the success of any
organisation. Many academics have researched the design of Management Control System
(MCS) pertaining to multinational companies in countries such as the UK, USA and Japan.
However, up till now, there are little studies made with respect to the design of MCS in the
Singapore context. Hence, this provides the motivation for the conduct of this research. This
report, therefore hopes to contribute to the research done thus far in the design of MCS in
Singapore and to provide a trigger point for further research in the same area.
The case study approach was adopted because of its advantages and its effectiveness in the
attainment of our objective, which is to better the understanding of MCS in the local context.
The case company chosen for the study is from the computer industry. This choice was made
because of the characteristics of the industry as well as the fact that the company has overseas
subsidiaries. The latter fact facilitates comparison with findings from other concurrent final
year research projects on the practices of Japan, US and European MNCs in Singapore.
The results of this research are not inconsistent with the results of other researches found in
the literature. Although the results of this study cannot be conclusive because of the
constraint of using a single case study approach, this research has succeeded in achieving the
objectives it has set out. |
