sg-ntu-dr.10356-631232020-09-27T20:19:28Z Investigating a developmental coach’s decision making in an individual sports setting Han, Songyuan Koh Koon Teck Science::General 35 p. Decision making in the sport setting has been an important field that is under exploration because it is believed that an accurate and quick decision from the coach can offer advantageous positioning that could make the difference between a win and a loss in a competitive game. However, research into decision-making is minimal and even lesser research has been done into understanding how and where a developmental coach acquires good decision-making craft. Therefore the purpose of this study was to both investigate how and where the developmental coaches learned their craft in decision making, and to identify the potential areas for improvement and identify strengths that may contribute to formal education. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 8 participants (4 male, 4 female) with coaching experiences of 4 years at least with an achievement. Thematic analysis of the data revealed three main sources in their acquisition of their good decision making craft: (a) Past athletic experience, where participants recalled their athletic years as a source of decision making skill acquisition in their coaching years, (b) Personality traits that the coaches possess that continually improves the individual’s concept of decision making, (c) External learning avenues such as a mentor or past good coaches that provide guidance and logical thinking processes. These results are discussed in depth to further examine the rationale behind the factors that contribute to good decision making and using the essence to provide suggestions to facilitate future coaches to acquire good decision-making craft.
