Smart phones and tablets are commonly used by gym users to improve their exercise experience. Many past researchers have examined on the role of a combined auditory and visual distraction and its effects on exercise endurance and adherence. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of watching videos as a distraction on physical endurance. The hypothesis that will be tested was that watching of videos would serve to be an effective distraction to increase the physical endurance of a task. A total of 50 participants (16 male, 34 female) were recruited in the study. The study involved a single-leg raise endurance task which participants have to perform for two sessions on separate days. During the second session, participants were randomly assigned into the experimental group (watching videos) and control group (no videos). In the experimental group, participants were allowed to watch any YouTube videos on the smart tablet while performing the task. The endurance time spent persisting the task was recorded at the end of each session. The data was analysed using the mixed ANOVA and simple main effect test. A significant effect was found in the experimental group who revealed to have improved their endurance time significantly during the posttest as compared to the control group. Hence, the present findings provide support for prior studies which suggested that watching videos can act as an effective distraction to induce a more enjoyable exercise experience that led to greater persistence of the endurance task.
