Description
Summary:Microfabrication technologies have been advancing over the years and have proved to be an influence especially in the biological sciences. With the integration of a microstripline together with a microfluidic channel, magnetofluidic chips are made. In this project, techniques such as photolithography, ion-milling, electron beam evaporation and oxygen plasma bonding are used in the fabrication of the device. The integrated magnetofluidic device utilizes two types of physics, fluid dynamics and electromagnetism. In this project, two types of microstripline, single and double microstriplines were modelled on COMSOL Multiphysics and their magnetic and joule heating properties were analysed. In the analysis of the microstripline structures, it allow for the calculation of the magnetic force through the generated magnetic field. Flow rates were also modelled to achieve hydrodynamic focusing as it is important for attaining higher sorting efficiency. This was also done experimentally to demonstrate sorting of microparticles and magnetically tagged HeLa cancer cells. The integrated device can potentially be used for many bio-applications such as blood cleansing and cell separation.
