The impact colonizers have had on South Asian nations, particularly India, has been immense, and one can see it exhibited in many aspects of the societies, its people, and their lives. Specifically, the coming and going of the imperialists has left its mark in India in the minds of people and in the form of changes to the conditions of women’s lives, as well as in feminists and feminist movements. In spite of the unmistakable progression made towards lives of both urban and rural Indian women, the answer to the debate about the extent of such a development remains ambivalent. The aim of this thesis is to argue that the selected texts showcase improvements in the conditions of women in India, but also suggest that much more need to be done. Gender inequality, and its issues which lie at the root of India’s societal system, has yet to be completely resolved despite activists consistently addressing and attempting to tackle them.
