The process of designing a product typically begins with either a choice of form or function. Unconventionally, this project took-off with material choice as the start. In an effort to create awareness on the effects of waste created daily, used newspaper has been chosen as the beginning material for this project. The fixed limitations set by the choice of the selected material has created opportunities for the designer to explore and push the boundaries of what the material can do. It enabled the designer to embark on a journey to manipulate the appearance and properties of the material in order to make undervalued and undesirable items such as used newspapers appealing to the general masses. NuPaper contains pulped newspapers fused with a biodegradable plastic to create a durable composite. This concoction, conceived by the designer through countless trials has resulted in a material that is not only durable but more importantly affordable and eco-friendly. The two end products of this comprehensive process, the NuPaper Stool and Rocker are designed to supplement as an education tool for a child, they serve to represent the designer's aspiration to mould the mindsets of the future generations through the exposure of objects created from materials commonly regarded as waste.
