Summary: | Structural components made from high strength material are usually undergoing high stresses and are likely to exceed its yield strength and ultimately fractured. To prevent unforeseen structural failure from occurring, localization of stresses were quantified and made use by designing engineer. In this report, stress analysis was carried out on short flat bar with projections by using boundary element method in the form of stress concentration factor. Axial or shear loading was applied to the short flat bar with projections under remote or local restraint. Stress distribution profile was presented and the effect of stress raisers have been studied. Effect of geometric parameters of the bar on stress concentration factor were obtained and analyzed. A comparison between published finite element analyses data from literature and results of this analyses was done in the later section of this report. It was found that stress peaked at the fillet region. The results obtained suggested an increase of normalized fillet radius with respect to shank depth, R/d reduced the effect of stress concentration. |
