Description
Summary:Technological advances in the smartphone industry have revolutionized how we live everyday life. It allows for daily transaction and communication to be done through a few simple taps on the phone screen. Ranging from the simple communicating via text message to the more dynamic interaction with the internet, it has truly changed how we interact with the outside world. With such advances, many important information and transactions are increasingly being sent through smartphone applications. In the past, botmasters targeted computers to infect and to be controlled for malicious activities ranging from DDoS attacks to mining of sensitive information. This shift in technology trend has inevitably resulted in smartphones being increasingly popular as a target to be infected by botmasters. In this report, we will be creating an application that is able to detect mobile botnets on android phones. The application will start by going through the learning phase of learning the normal usage pattern of the user. Using the learning phase as a template, the application will scan for anomalies in the SMS volume flow and Internet network flow. Upon detection of abnormal conditions in either of the two, the application will prompt the user, suggesting that the phone may possibly be under the influence of a SMS or Internet network C&C botmaster.
