Summary: | In tribology test for friction coefficient, high speed steel pin with different geometrical characteristics microscale textures were fabricated on the flat face surface of the pin. The friction coefficient changes due to the introduction of micro-textures are being examined. In the determination of the friction coefficient, the pin-on-disc method is first applied to examine the phenomenon and possible factors creating it. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) was applied to texture the flat face surface of the pin with dimples textures of different diameters and area density to allow for changing of friction coefficient on the pin flat surface. By applying a dimple texture on the flat surface the friction coefficient could be reduced or increased with respect to untextured pin. Pin with dimples of smaller diameter and highest density ratio provides best reduction of friction coefficient in pin on disc test under non-lubricated condition. The results indicate that surface texturing of pin reduces wear on both the surfaces of pin and disc and hence tool life and performance of cutting processes. |
