Also they are used in our daily life to make life more convenient. Smart building management system is a good example. People can control every electrical appliance in the house simply using a tablet PC. Furthermore, the energy management system will collect the data transferred by the sensors and process them so that users can get all the information they want, including humidity, temperature, power consumption and even electric cost. However, this system is designed based on an embedded computer called Beagleboard-xM, which is huge and very expensive compared with the newest model called Beaglebone Black (BBB). Moreover, the data transmission in the system is realized by ZigBee wireless technology and it’s very expensive. In this project, the hardware and software architecture of the NTU Energy Cloud System (ECS) were studied along with the Beaglebone Black and its operating system. Also the Database Management System (DBMS) and MySQL were studied and used. Then, ECS was mapped from the Beagleboard-xM to the Beaglebone Black in order to develop a BBB-based smart gate. After the mapping work was done, the system was tested out on the Beaglebone Black. At last, ZigBee technology and Wi-Fi technology were studied for future work which will concentrate on replacing ZigBee modules with Wi-Fi modules.
