Wavelength-Division-Multiplexed-Passive-Optical-Networks (WDM-PONs) serve as a good solution to solve this problem. WDM-PON has many advantages compared to the Time-Division-Multiplexing networks such as larger capacity, better security and also point-to-point connectivity. The cost of external lasers are very expensive and thus the development of cost-saving colorless transmitters for WDM-PON is very important. For this project, reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is chosen as the transmitter for the WDM-PON system. The performance for both self-seeding and external-seeding RSOA are investigated and compared. Other important parameters such as transmission distance, seeding power, extinction ratio and data rate etc. are also investigated to observe their impact on the transmission performance. All the simulations are set-up using Optisystem 13. The results show various plots of bit error rate (BER) vs received power to analyze and investigate the impact of different parameters on the system performance. The impact of these parameters as well as the performance of both self-seeding and external-seeding RSOA are discussed.
