LAN technology has made a triumphant entrance to the computing world in the 1970s and
the commercial market has also testified to the quick adoption of this revolutionary
discovery. The available literature that we have explored was far from sporadic, indicating
a perennial interest in this technology that was not petered out through the passage of
time. And it is with this endearing market response that our group is interested to find out
about the future direction of LAN and whether it prescribes a new era of computerized
accounting in the years to come.
With the advantages that LAN has over the other alternative computer architectures, it
seems likely that the business world will embrace it as their future computing platform for
accounting applications. And along with a progressive inclination towards Electronic Data
Interchange (EDI), downsizing and the development of the present generation of LAN
based accounting software programs, it may be indicative of a likely trend towards
LAN for the accounting profession.
Finally a Critical Success Factors (CSFs) framework for a future LAN based accounting
system is also presented, to enable the reader to understand the essential issues facing a
successful LAN installation. Two case studies are also presented in support of this
framework. |
