The existing dominant refrigeration system is the vapour compression refrigeration system which utilizes refrigerants that are harmful to the environment. Adsorption refrigeration system might be the solution to this problem because it is environmentally friendly and has the ability to be powered by renewable energy or waste heat. This study aims to study on an adsorption refrigeration chiller using zeolite-water working pair instead of the conventional silica gel-water working pair. An experimental study was conducted on the chiller with a 100KW water heater as the heat source that provides hot water input, a 10KW water heater to simulate as the cooling load for the system and a cooling tower was used to provide cooling water circulation to the system. The performance data of the system in terms of COP and cooling capacity were then recorded with variations in different hot water inlet temperature. This study will be able to give a general impression of zeolite-water working pair and their performance at low temperature heat source. The performance data from the zeolite-water adsorption chiller were then place in comparison with existing silica gel-water two bed adsorption chiller. This comparison study shows how increment of heat source temperature exhibits different behaviour on the system COP and cooling capacity.
