The most traditional way of generating power is by the burning of fossil fuel. However, due to the harmful effect on the environment, most of the people had shifted their methods of generating power to renewable energy. Renewable energy is energy that is generated by the nature. Some examples of renewable energy are the solar, wind, tidal and geothermal. However, due to its natural characteristic, the power generated from them is unstable. For example the wind energy, not all the times there is the same amount of wind blowing at a certain area. Its wind speed is the most important factor for the wind turbine to generate power. Thus, due to the uncertainty of power generated, there will be either lack of power or an excessive amount of power supplying into system. In order not to waste the amount energy generated, the use of Battery Energy Storage System (BES) is used. This excessive energy is being store in the battery which is also called the charging of the battery. Since the battery will be charged, there is a need to determine how much energy the battery can be stored to reach its maximum. Therefore, Battery Management System (BMS) is used to determine the battery state of charge (SOC). The determination of the state of charge is determined by the initial voltage and the amount of current flowing through the battery. Due to the imperfection of the manufacturing of the battery, each and individual battery will discharge and charge at slightly a different rate. Thus, it is needed to equalize the battery with the others. Lastly, to ensure those parameters are obtained, a voltage sensor, current sensor and the use of controller are integrated together. This controller will sense the data from the sensor and present those data as any parameter which is needed on the workstation. Therefore, this entire component will construct into the BMS.
