Singapore is a free market and is open to foreign retailers. It has low import duties and enjoy a good reputation for offering genuine products. But the Singapore retail market is highly competitive because too many products and concepts are repeated. Nearly every international fashion brand is present in Singapore. Several of the major departmental stores have posted poor results in recent years, forcing them to re-merchandise and re-position by targeting at specific niches or by having good differentiation.This report looks at one of Singapore's oldest shopping malls, Shaw Leisure Gallery. The mall have been experiencing large turnover of retail tenants for the past twelve months and has now just undergone another facelift in the aim to survive in this competitive market. The report will begin with a brief discussion of the retail industry of Singapore in the past till the present. Factors which affects retail growth will also be discussed followed by a look at various micromarkets in Singapore.
