Summary: | Android is the largest installed operating system for mobile platforms across the globe and growing at a tremendous rate. Thus by tapping on the large user base of the Android mobile devices and its powerful developmental framework, the agenda of this project is to develop an indigenous mobile application designed for Nanyang Technological University students, catered specifically for educational purposes. Through the innovation of achieving the first ever successfully developed mobile application for the academic institution, known as UStudent, the application aims to target a handful of major functionality essential for student learning and interactivity that can be used anytime on a daily basis, with a touch of fun element. One of the major functions is the Calendar which displays the academic week to assist the students in keeping track of time and log important events and deadlines with reminders. With similar reminder system to the calendar, the Timetable enables students to track their own class schedules conveniently. The Clicker system aims to serve as an alternative to the current clicker device where students’ responses can be collected and displayed in real time. In addition, a social networking tool, Friends, is included to promote student interaction where users can search and add friends to their own contact list in the application with geolocation-tracking feature. Another major functionality is instant messaging, Chat, which enables users within the same lecture or tutorial group to interact by messaging in real time. The application also supported the RSS news feed which displays the latest News and Events in Nanyang Technological University. UStudent has been successfully developed and tested with emulators and actual mobile device over the course of the project. With a limitless possibility offered by the successful development of UStudent mobile application in enabling the use of mobile technology to enhance user interactivity using a powerful backend such as QuickBlox, future implementations and problems associated with the development of the application is explored in this report, offering a huge potential to expand the application’s capabilities. |
