Summary: | Many countries are promoting Building Information Modeling which has been proven to be a key technology to improve the productivity of construction industry. By transforming the traditional two-dimensional representation into multi-dimension digital representation of intrinsic, physical and functional characteristics of a building as an object oriented model tied to a database, building information can be edited, shared and exchanged instantly to provide relevant and effective information at all stages during the life cycle of the project. In Singapore, the usage of Building Information Modeling will be made mandatory for all disciplines in the construction industry by 1st July 2015. Together with the wide usage of precast construction method, the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore aims to bring the productivity of construction industry to a greater height. This project focuses on the application of Building Information Modeling as well as its productivity improvements on the construction industry. Meanwhile, the author also proposes a Building Information Modeling based navigation and inventory management system that can be used in the precast construction in correspondence with the current objective of the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore. Real on-site data of current precast construction was collected from the Lee Kong Chian Experimental Medicine Building project at Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Questionnaires followed by an interview were also conducted with Mr Voon, the Civil and Structural manager of the project to understand the current workflow, difficulties and challenges involved. Due to knowledge limitation, technology restraint and time constraint, the author could not create the actual system that can be deployed for immediate operation in a real project. All the related evaluations and feedbacks are based on simulations and assumptions. However, the research department which the author was liaised with is going to propose this system to the relevant authority to gain support for its development in the near future. |
