Summary:This study, which is targeted specifically at the development of the unit trust industry in Singapore, endeavours to obtain a profile of this sector, to assess the factors that affected the development of the local unit trust industry and to suggest possible ways to foster future growth. The methodology used to achieve the objectives stated above included the administration of a questionnaire to each fund manager of the 23 unit trusts and the conduct of personal interviews with three professional staff. The team had compiled information gathered and present the report in such a way that a description of the basic characteristics of unit trust, the procedures for investing in unit trust and the legislation of unit trust in Singapore, to enable the readers to understand what unit trust is and how it operates. Before looking at the factors affecting the growth of the unit trust industry, an overview of this industry in Singapore is studied to have a glimpse of the history, recent development and current state of the industry. Some factors had led to the gradual expansion of the industry over the years. However, the rate of growth is considered to be slow due to some hindrance. A comparison is made between Hong Kong and Singapore unit trust industry whereby Singapore is still lagged behind Hong Kong although both began at about the same time. To overcome the problems, the team had made some recommendations which may of some help to the industry.
