Benchmarking and analysis of 3D printing system for children use
Despite not having any standards to certify 3D printers are child-friendly, many 3D printer manufacturers have claimed that the printers are suitable for children. No formal standards also mean that each personal fabricator uses its own software and hardware standards, making interoperability and collaborations difficult. There is an urgent need to tackle the criteria and safety aspect of 3D printing in order to develop a set of standards to insure the young users. In this report, analysis on 3D printer regarding safe use for children will be performed. The analysis mainly focuses on hardware, software, material, process, cost and maintenance of 3D printer. Each analysis identifies the potential hazard or problem and the accompanied considerations will be highlighted. In addition, a local landscape survey will be conducted on children interaction with 3D printer in schools to serve as a case study. This analysis presented will provide foresights for future development of 3D printer standards.
