Testing and analysis of electrical machine winding insulation degradation process using power transformer as test subject

With the abundance usage of electrical machine in our current generation, and that prolong usage of the electrical machine will cause failure and hence maintenance is needed. Therefore, it is important to know the various types of faults and the main cause of these fault. Estimating the remaining us...

Therefore, it is important to know the various types of faults and the main cause of these fault. Estimating the remaining useful life of an electrical machine is also necessary, so that its reliability can be increased. As a transformer is similar in many ways when compared to an electrical machine, the transformer will be used as a substitute to study the types of faults. Seeing that a typical transformer’s life time can stretch up to 25 years and more, and that the weakest part of an electrical machine and a transformer is the windings, a suitable accelerated aging method will be needed. Therefore, thermal aging method is chosen to be the accelerated aging process. With the accelerated aging method, the transformer winding will be able to degrade at a shorter duration. In this project, the process of winding insulation degradation using means of accelerated aging method will be studied as well as the thermal effect on all kinds of transformers parameters. The analysis about the different kinds of fault that occurred during the experiment will also be analyzed through the use of Matlab.
