In some applications, the messages are sent automatically from a computer to a list of mobile phone users and the messages received are processed by a computer. With an SMS modem attached to a PC, many applications can be implemented. The report details the development of six applications utilizing the SMS as briefly summarized below. The first application is for sending SMS to one or multiple recipients. It supports several types of message templates for various purposes. Specifically, the types of messages include multiple choice question, survey question, events and pure text message type. The second application is for retrieving SMS received and for displaying them. The received SMS including the arrival date and time of the message can be displayed in the user interface on the PC. It also provides the function to adjust the message font size for better display. The third application is for creating a contact list. The user can then choose the recipients from the contact list instead of entering the phone numbers one by one. Furthermore, this application also allows the user to send messages to a group of recipients in a list. The forth application allows the user to collect data from the responded SMS. The collected data can be displayed on the PC monitor in various formats, such as histogram. Hence, the user will able to view the number of respondents of each choice in a graphical form. In fifth application, the user can change the background image to an image of his choice. Last but not least, there is a timer application. It includes a stopwatch function, a timer function and an alarm clock function. These functions can be used for monitoring the response time of SMS. The stopwatch can help the user to keep track of the time that the recipients need to reply a SMS. The timer function is used for countdown set. The alarm clock function can be used as a reminder.
