Summary: | Cloud computing services provide clients with computing resources from cloud data
centers operated by service providers. Clients can approach to cloud applications
through cloud services. However, energy consumption of cloud data centers is
growing dramatically and becoming an important fraction of data center operating
cost. Resources of servers are usually lowly utilized due to resource stranding and
fragmentation, and over provisioning. Virtualization technique is used to provide
effective resource sharing by most of the cloud service providers.
In this project, we present a measurement study to characterize the influence of
virtualization. We establish a small test bed of virtual servers and investigate how
virtualization affects the power consumption within servers and the performance of
the system with respect to certain parameters. We measure power consumption,
average request delay, throughput, and failed request of the web servers. Our results
show that virtual servers can save more power. We envision that these insights would
help architecture design of future data centers. |
