Through the characters portrayal in his work, this thesis aims to understand the society in modern China after the economic reform in 1978, by discussing how the changes brought about by modernization, marketization and globalization, are influencing the society in terms of their lifestyle and values, leading them into emotional and mental crises. Firstly, this thesis will explain the concepts of modernization, marketization and globalization, then analyze the characters from three aspects, namely diasporic experiences, ladies in the modern society, emotional crises, and mental struggles of the intellectuals, in which their similar experiences make them remnants (Ling Yu Zhe). This thesis hopes to introduce Jiang Yitan to the audience, as he is a unique short-story writer. His works are suitable for people from all walks of life, as his language used is simple and non-flowery, reflecting the lives of everyone. |
