| Summary: | This essay seeks to map the transformative role of art and language in the representation of reality. Due to the fleeting nature of language and its meaning, reality is provisional and transient; hence language is able to reimagine reality, providing varied perspectives of everything. Because of the ephemerality of language the notion of factual reality becomes unimportant, and is disregarded, as language is able to invent reality. My argument will focus on the inventive power of language and art, and how they represent, reimagine and invent reality in John Banville’s, The Sea. |
