Study of interference alignment for wireless communications

When interference occurs in a wireless communication channel, the intended signals must share the channel space with the interfering signals, resulting in a loss of throughput and reliability to the overall system. This is a problem that is continually researched on in order to derive solutions that...

This is a problem that is continually researched on in order to derive solutions that could enhance the integrity of wireless networks. Several methods of dealing with such interference have already been proposed before to optimise such interference channels. Each of these methods have advantages and are used for different conditions. However, the practical usage of most of these cases is deterred from the complexity of the techniques. Interference alignment is a recently established technique for handling and optimising interference within a channel. It uses both transmit precoding and interference suppression at the receivers in order to control the received signal subspace, aligning the interfering signals and cancelling these out simultaneously. The technique assumes that local channel conditions at the transmitters are known so that the transmit filters can precode the signals. The objective of this project is to carry out a comprehensive study on interference alignment and its uses in different scenarios such as in distributed alignment alogrithms and feasibility conditions. Resource allocation issues will be handled using developing tools such as aligned beamforming, and the feasibility of different systems will be verified. Simulations will also be done in MATLAB to properly demonstrate the interference alignment techniques.
