The construction of Chinatown Station is considered to be the most difficult amongst the 16 underground MRT stations on the North-East Line. Situated in the midst of "Chinatown"* this area is densely populated and is in one of the oldest parts of Singapore where a number of buildings are to be conserved. The station is located directly beneath two of the busiest roads in Singapore and between buildings that are within 2m from the station perimeter walls. Eu Tong Sen Canal runs between the roads and full flow capacity has to be maintained at all times. In addition, spanning across these roads and the canal sits the "Garden Bridge"", a majestic pedestrian overpass whose bored pile foundations pass through the proposed station box. This bridge will have to be supported and kept open to pedestrians at all times.
