In 1945-1955, rising social unrest and anti-colonial sentiments resulted in the dysfunction of the state apparatus then. In addition, the conflicts between the political factors within and outside Singapore led to the slowing down of Singapore’s economy. The differing points of view regarding Singapore’s governance led to disagreement between the British government and the different political parties in Singapore. All those tensions subsequently resulted in deteriorating race relations among people in Singapore. Most importantly, the complexity interplay of the respective factors of the state apparatus led to great changes in Singapore’s education system. Therefore, using Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser’s theory in this thesis will help to discuss the relationship between the state apparatus and ideology. At the same time, this paper will explore how the state apparatus resolved the social conflicts through the changes in the educational policies and contents in Chinese textbooks, leading to a pro-Malayan state. |
