Most of the studies that have latched unto the somewhat banal oppressor-oppressed dyad in conventional discourse have failed to examine the male client of the prostitute beyond the academic gaze (Khan, 2015). This has led to the production of skewed knowledge and an absolutely false representation of the male client in the current scholarship. Therefore, my primary focus is to immerse myself specifically into the lives of married men who buy sex from prostitutes, through participant observations and in-depth narrative interviews. Within my research, I establish a neutral vantage point in which I conducted my research, using the voices of these men to challenge current academic and public discourse. My strategy is to utilize emerging theories that have yet been developed among the works of scholars and situating them in the context of Singapore. I used the Theory of Social Exchange.
