Understanding the transition to adulthood of young Singaporeans living in university halls : a space and time analysis

The question of how young Singaporeans living in university residential halls negotiate the transition to adulthood is considered in this paper. Limited research in adolescent’s transition to adulthood in Singapore has motivated this study which hopes to contribute to works examining various life pathways within the sociology of life course. This paper aims to critically analyze the experiences of individuals in their everyday lives in the social space of university halls, utilising the space-time concepts of “representation”, “routine” and “rhythm” in examining their transition. It argues that spatial and temporal conceptualizations are important sites of inquiry in discerning a deeper understanding of different facets of their experiences. The key focus of this paper lies in observing their transition within dynamic social processes occurring in university halls.
