An analysis on love tales in the Mid-Tang from the psychoanalytic perspective : a case study on "The Biography of Ying-ying"

Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theor...

Description
Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory is a powerful and common tool used to analyse the inner world of fictional characters. Examining the love tales in the mid Tang dynasty, the image of Cui Yingying in “The Biography of Ying-ying” is filled with dilemma, fully showcasing her ambivalence. From the psychoanalytic perspective, she faces internal struggles between the ego and the id caused by her superego—this leads to erratic actions. This contradiction accurately reflects how any reasonable person would have felt, thus having an epoch-marking significance. Besides, this autobiography gives us a glimpse into the inner world of the mid Tang dynasty, thereby reflecting the unequal standing between the two sexes. This thesis will use Freud’s psychoanalysis theory as a theoretical basis to interpret Yingying’s ambivalence and the poems related to “The Biography of Ying-ying”. Furthermore, a comparison will also be made between Yingying, Li Wa and Long Nu’s original image, bringing out the legend and modern era significance in Yingying.
