Much research has been done on sexism in punk. Yet, little of these researches have been conducted in Asian countries. In this research, I discuss how sexism is manifested in the Singaporean punk scene. Punk prides itself on strong anti-establishment, non-conformist and egalitarian values, speaking out against inequalities such as racism and sexism. Existing literature has illustrated how punk scenes are rooted in masculine values. They are also sexist in essence, implementing practices that marginalize and discriminate against females, demonstrating the extensiveness of sexism in society. Researching on the Singaporean punk scene, qualitative interviews were conducted with participants to uncover how they participate in punk and how sexism is manifested. The data showed how sexism in the Singaporean punk scene tend to be subtle in nature, and how Asian values influenced the manifestation of sexism. Therefore, the findings reinforce the ubiquitous nature of sexism in society.
